The largest palace in Berlin and a former residence of kings. Commissioned by Sophie Charlotte, the palace was built towards the end of the 17th century and in the following years, it was extended and a large formal garden was added to it.
You can tour the Old Palace and the New Wing. The interior is nicely decorated in baroque and rococo styles. The Western part of the palace also houses the Orangery, where rare species of plants were kept during winter and in the summer; various festivities were held here as well.
Even if you don't go inside, make sure to explore its extensive peaceful gardens. Stroll around and see the Belvedere showcasing a collection of Berlin porcelain, the Neuer Pavilion with a collection of arts and crafts, and the former Palace Theatre which was turned into a museum dedicated to prehistoric archaeology.
