Opened in 1987, as part of the celebration of 750 years since the founding of Berlin, this museum follows the long and colourful history of the German nation, as well as that of entire Europe.
The museum is located in two main buildings, one modernist, other Baroque, which were erected some 250 years apart from one another. The museum also houses a library and a cinema, which has a repertoire of approximately 800 historical films.
The main, permanent exhibition in the museum, called German History in Images and Artefacts, features thousands of objects, ranging from everyday life household objects to art and coins. The museum also hosts many temporary exhibitions and events.
If you choose to arrive via public transport, the museum is most easily accessible by bus or S-/U-Bahn, all of which have stops nearby. There is also a car park below the nearby Bebel square if you prefer to come by car.
