Porta Pinciana

Local namePorta Pinciana
LocationLudovisi, Rome, Italy

This 5th-century Roman gate is one of the latest additions to the Aurelian Walls, a 19-kilometres-long defensive circle of walls, which was meant to protect the inner city of Rome.

The walls were built in 3rd century AD, with the use of advanced construction materials like concrete. At some places, they reach the height of 10 meters.

The name of the gate stems from the hill upon which it was located. As the entire area belonged to a noble Roman family called the Pincias, it was named in their honour.
