Badulla Essentials

Badulla serves as a gateway to Sri Lanka’s Uva Province, characterized by dramatic elevation changes and colonial-era engineering. The region features the Nine Arches Bridge and the Demodara Spiral, showcasing early 20th-century railway design. Natural landmarks include the 190-foot Dunhinda Falls and the challenging ascent of Ella Rock. The area is also home to the Bogoda Wooden Bridge, the oldest surviving structure of its kind in the country, and extensive high-altitude tea plantations.

Ella Spice Garden

A private garden offering guided tours focused on the cultivation of cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, and pepper, often including traditional cooking demonstrations.

Little Adam's Peak

A 1,141-meter peak featuring a moderate hiking trail through tea plantations. The summit provides panoramic views of the Ella Gap and the southern highland plains.

Rawana Ella Falls

A 25-meter-high waterfall cascading over an oval-shaped concave rock outcrop. Local legend associates the site with the Ramayana, specifically as a hiding place for Princess Sita.

Nine Arches Bridge Viewpoint

Elevated vantage points overlooking a 91-meter-long railway viaduct. Built in 1921 entirely from stone, brick, and cement, the bridge stands 24 meters high without steel support.

Mahamevnawa Buddhist Monastery

A modern meditation center and monastery featuring traditional Buddhist architecture, serene gardens, and stupas used for worship and reflection.

Uva Halpewatte Tea Factory

Dunhinda Falls

A 64-meter waterfall fed by the Badulu Oya river. It is named for the 'smoky' spray created by the force of the water hitting the base pool.

Demodara Railway Spiral

A unique railway loop where the track passes under itself through a tunnel. This engineering feat allows trains to navigate the steep gradient of the Demodara hills.

Bogoda Wooden Bridge

Built in the 16th century during the Dambadeniya era, this is the oldest surviving wooden bridge in Sri Lanka, constructed entirely without iron nails.
