El Escorial
El Escorial is a town in the Sierra de Guadarrama, about 50 km northwest of Madrid. It stands next to San Lorenzo de El Escorial, where the Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial is located: a vast granite palace, monastery, basilica and library built for King Philip II in the 16th century and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
It is a popular day trip from Madrid, and a base for walks in the mountains. The air is cooler than in the capital.

Historia
King Philip II ordered the monastery built to commemorate the victory at the Battle of St. Quentin in 1557 and to serve as a royal burial place. The architects Juan Bautista de Toledo and later Juan de Herrera designed it, and it was completed in 1584.
It was a royal palace, a monastery, a school and a library at once, and the center of the Spanish court in the Habsburg era. The building and its site were listed by UNESCO in 1984.
