Archaeological and Heritage Sites

The Region of Murcia preserves a dense timeline of Mediterranean history, from the Paleolithic remains at Cueva Negra to the major Bronze Age El Argar settlements of La Bastida and La Almoloya. In Cartagena, the Roman legacy is prominent through the restored Roman Theatre and the extensive Roman Forum District. The collection also highlights later heritage, including the 18th-century Baroque Templete in Caravaca de la Cruz and the 20th-century coastal fortifications of Batería de Las Cenizas, featuring massive Vickers guns.

An 18th-century hydraulic engineering project designed to supply water to the city of Lorca. The system includes stone-built canals and aqueducts integrated into the foothills of the Sierra Espuña mountains.

Martyrium de La Alberca

Cueva Negra del Estrecho del Río Quípar

A Paleolithic site containing evidence of human activity from 800,000 years ago. It has yielded Acheulean stone tools and some of the oldest documented evidence of fire use by hominids in Europe.
