Sacred Temples and Shrines

This collection features 19 significant stops along the 1,200-kilometer Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage. These Shingon Buddhist sites include Iwaya-ji, carved into a towering conglomerate rock face, and Yashima-ji, situated on a high volcanic plateau. The list spans the diverse landscapes of Kochi, Ehime, Tokushima, and Kagawa, showcasing historic wooden pagodas, ancient statues of Monju Bosatsu, and sacred sites established by the monk Kobo Daishi during the 9th century.

45 Iwaya-ji

The 45th temple of the Shikoku pilgrimage is built into a massive conglomerate rock cliff. It features a wooden main hall nestled against the stone face and several small caves historically used for ascetic training.
