Het historische centrum van Taormina wordt bepaald door zijn middeleeuwse vestingwerken, waaronder de 14e-eeuwse stenen toegangspoorten Porta Messina en Porta Catania. De stad beschikt over belangrijke architectonische bezienswaardigheden zoals het Palazzo Corvaja en het Palazzo Duchi di Santo Stefano, dat een Siciliaans gotisch ontwerp laat zien.
