Hel Essentials

Hel marks the symbolic beginning of Poland at the tip of a 35-kilometer peninsula where the Baltic Sea meets the Bay of Puck. Military Heritage of Hel

The Hel Peninsula served as a strategic military stronghold for over a century, most notably during the 1939 defense of Poland. This collection features the massive 406 mm Schleswig-Holstein battery, the H. Laskowski battery which defended the coast against German warships, and various bunkers, fire control towers, and artillery positions spanning from WWII to the Cold War era. These sites, many of which are part of the Museum of Coastal Defense, offer a detailed look at coastal fortification engineering.

Coastal Attractions in Hel

Hel’s coastal landscape features a blend of maritime navigation, military history, and natural sand formations. The 41.5-meter red brick lighthouse provides a vantage point over the peninsula’s tip, where the Baltic Sea meets the Bay of Puck at Plaża Cypel. The area is notable for its underwater heritage, including the scuttled destroyers ORP Wicher II and ORP Grom II, and the ORP Bryza K-18, a cutter intentionally sunk to create a diving site. These wrecks, alongside shore-accessible remains like the Kuter WŁA-55, document the region's naval and fishing history.
