Chania's religious architecture reflects a complex history under Byzantine, Venetian, and Ottoman rule. The city center features the 19th-century Greek Orthodox Cathedral and the 17th-century Yiali Tzami, the oldest Ottoman building on Crete. Nearby, the Etz Hayyim Synagogue preserves the heritage of the island's Romaniote Jewish community. On the Akrotiri Peninsula, the 17th-century Agia Triada Tzagaroli and the fortress-like Gouverneto Monastery showcase Cretan Renaissance style, while the abandoned Katholiko Monastery remains one of the island's oldest monastic sites.

Monastery Katholiko

11th-century abandoned monastic complex built into the walls of the Avlaki Gorge. It features a rock-cut church dedicated to St. John the Hermit and a massive stone bridge spanning the ravine.
