Tower of Belém

Local nameTorre de Belém
LocationBelém, Lisbon, Portugal

Built in 1519, this tower is one of the most prominent landmarks of Lisbon. It used to serve as a defence tower during the Age of Discoveries and it is now listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Designed by Francisco de Arruda, this fortified tower serves as an example of Portuguese Manueline architecture, though other architectural styles can also be spotted. The tower is made of beige-white limestone, which comes from the Lisbon area. Motifs decorating the tower depict several historical figures, such as Vincent of Saragossa, the patron saint of Lisbon and Valencia.

The terrace can be accessed and it offers perfect views of the surrounding area.
