Best of Washington in One Day
Visit the most important buildings and major monuments of Washington.
This suggested itinerary starts with the Supreme Court - a beautiful neoclassical building made of marble dating back to 1935. Right across the street, there is possibly the largest library in the world - the Library of Congress. It is divided into three buildings which are connected by underground passages.
Continue to the United States Capitol, one of the iconic symbols of American democracy and the seat of the United States Congress. There are no entrance fees in the Capitol but be sure to make your tour reservation in advance if you want to get inside. Walk through the National Mall boasting many significant sights and monuments e.g. the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, Vietnam Veterans Memorial or the Korean War Veterans Memorial. The White House is not easy to get into as a tourist - tours must be applied for through one’s Member of Congress and foreigners must submit requests through the Washington embassies of their countries.
After you cross the river, you will arrive at the Pentagon. The distinctive building of Pentagon is where the United States Department of Defense is seated. Apart from the many offices, the building also houses a central plaza nicknamed as the “ground zero”. If you wish to visit Pentagon, you need to book a tour in advance and we recommend that you do it as soon as possible for the places are scarce.
