Beaches and Lighthouses in Argyll and Bute

Coastal Escapes

Argyll and Bute’s coastline features a network of historic lighthouses designed primarily by the Stevenson family in the 19th century. This selection includes the 1857 Rubha nan Gall near Tobermory and the 1812 Toward Point Lighthouse near Dunoon. Complementing these maritime structures is Calgary Beach on the Isle of Mull, known for its white shell sand and clear waters. These sites mark key navigational points along the Inner Hebrides and the Firth of Clyde.

Rubha nan Gall Lighthouse

Built in 1857 by David and Thomas Stevenson, this 19-meter white tower is located north of Tobermory on the Isle of Mull. It is accessible via a 2-kilometer coastal woodland path from the town.

Calgary Beach

Possibly Scotland's best beach. The view is simply marvellous and would be more fit for the Caribbean.

Sgeirean Dubha Lighthouse

Also known as Lismore Lighthouse, this 26-meter tower was designed by Robert Stevenson and completed in 1833. It stands on a rocky outcrop in the Lynn of Lorn to guide vessels through the Sound of Mull.

Toward Point Lighthouse

Established in 1812 by Robert Stevenson, this lighthouse marks the southern tip of the Cowal Peninsula. It features a distinctive white tower and originally utilized a revolving light system to navigate the Firth of Clyde.

McArthur's Head Lighthouse

Located on the eastern coast of Islay, this lighthouse was built in 1859 by David and Thomas Stevenson. It stands 13 meters tall on a cliffside, marking the southern entrance to the Sound of Islay.
