Natural wonders of the Faroe Islands

The Faroe Islands feature a dramatic geological intersection of freshwater and the Atlantic Ocean. This collection highlights Vágar's vertical coastal drops, including the 60-meter Múlafossur and Bøsdalafossur, which drains the archipelago's largest lake. The list also covers the tidal lagoon of Saksunarvatn and the high-altitude mountain lakes of Suðuroy and Sandoy, representing the islands' diverse glacial topography and basaltic landscapes.

Bøsdalafossur

A 30-meter waterfall on Vágar where Lake Sørvágsvatn flows directly into the Atlantic Ocean. It is accessible via a five-kilometer hiking trail starting from Miðvágur.

Múlafossur

An iconic 60-meter waterfall that drops from the cliffs of Gásadalur village into the sea. It became easily accessible by car following the completion of the Gásadalstunnilin in 2004.

Saksunarvatn

A tidal lake situated in a deep glacial valley at Saksun. Surrounded by high mountains, the lake connects to the sea through a narrow channel that reveals a sandy beach at low tide.

Skarðsáfossur

Coastal waterfall located on the southern coast of Vágar, situated between the villages of Bøur and Gásadalur.

Bjarnafossur

Waterfall on the island of Vágar, visible from the road leading toward the coastal village of Bøur.

Reipsáfossur

Waterfall located on the western cliffs of Vágar, north of the remote village of Gásadalur.

Gróthúsvatn

Freshwater lake on the island of Sandoy, separated from the Atlantic by a narrow pebble beach. It is known for its surrounding birdlife and the nearby 'Sólarris' sculpture.
