Historic Temples of Keelung

Keelung’s spiritual landscape is anchored by the "Three Major Temples"—the City God Temple, Qing’an Temple, and Dianji Temple—which serve as historical centers of Taoist tradition. These sites showcase intricate Qing Dynasty craftsmanship, including stone carvings and ornate rooflines. The list also features Lingquan Zen Temple, a major Buddhist headquarters, and unique shrines like the Fairy Cave, a natural sea cave containing Buddhist relief carvings. These landmarks reflect the city's maritime history and the cultural reconciliation of early immigrant groups.

Ji long hu guo cheng huang miao

One of the "Three Major Temples" of Keelung, this Taoist site is dedicated to the City God. It features a large abacus symbolizing divine judgment and hosts a major annual parade on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month.

Ling quan chan si

A major Buddhist temple of the Soto Zen school and the headquarters of the Yuehmei Mountain branch. The complex includes historical architecture recognized as a Keelung cultural asset, set against a scenic hillside backdrop.

Qing An Temple

Established in 1780, this Mazu temple is unique for housing statues from Meizhou, Quanzhou, and Zhangzhou. These figures represent the historical reconciliation between different Chinese immigrant groups and the temple is a key site among the "Three Major Temples."

Dian ji gong

Dedicated to Kaizhang Shengwang, this Taoist temple was established in 1875. It serves as the spiritual heart of the Miaokou Night Market and is noted for its elaborate stone pillars and traditional architectural details.

Sheng an gong

A Mazu temple that serves as the first branch of the renowned Dajia Zhenlan Temple. It functions as a primary spiritual center for the community of Dajia immigrants residing in Keelung.

Tong huai gong

Established in 1949, this temple was founded after statues were discovered in a mountain valley. The structure is built along a cliffside, reflecting the local community's efforts to secure a permanent place of worship.
