Komodo National Park Essentials

Komodo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site in the Lesser Sunda Islands, encompasses the volcanic islands of Komodo, Rinca, and Padar. It serves as the primary habitat for the Komodo dragon, the world's largest lizard. The park’s marine environment features high biodiversity within the Coral Triangle, including manta ray cleaning stations and crescent-shaped sandbars. Geological highlights include beaches with pink sands colored by red coral fragments and microscopic Foraminifera, alongside rugged savannah landscapes overlooking deep blue bays.

Pink Beach

One of seven beaches globally featuring sand colored by microscopic Foraminifera and red coral fragments. Located on Komodo Island, the shore is bordered by clear waters and coral gardens suitable for snorkeling.

Manta Point

A marine cleaning station and feeding ground for reef manta rays located within the Karang Makassar reef. The area is characterized by strong currents that attract diverse pelagic life.

Rinca Island Komodo-Dragon park entrance

The primary arrival point for trekking on Rinca Island. This gateway leads to the ranger station where guided tours depart to observe Komodo dragons in their natural savannah and monsoon forest habitats.

Dermaga Loh Liang

The main wooden jetty and official entrance for visitors to Komodo Island. It serves as the starting point for all regulated trekking routes through the Loh Liang ranger station.

Taka Makassar

A small, crescent-shaped sandbar located near Manta Point. It is only accessible during low tide and is surrounded by a shallow turquoise lagoon and coral patches.

Flying Foxes

A mangrove islet, also known as Kalong Island, inhabited by thousands of large fruit bats. The colony emerges in a massive flight every evening at sunset to forage on the mainland.

Gili Lawadarat viewpoint

A summit on Gili Lawa Darat island offering a 360-degree vista of the northern park boundaries and the Flores Sea. The trail consists of a steep ascent through dry savannah grass.

Rinca island viewpoint over the bay

A vantage point reached via the trekking trails from the Loh Buaya station. It provides a view over the horseshoe-shaped bay and the hilly landscape of Rinca Island.
