Kumana National Park Essentials
Kumana National Park, situated on Sri Lanka's southeast coast, is a 35,000-hectare sanctuary famous for its 200-hectare mangrove swamp, the Kumana Villu. The area supports over 250 bird species, including rare migratory waterbirds like the black-necked stork. Beyond its wetlands, the park contains ancient Buddhist archaeological sites dating to the 3rd century BC, secluded coastal beaches, and inland reservoirs that serve as critical watering holes for elephants, leopards, and crocodiles.

This collection features thirteen secluded beaches along Sri Lanka’s rugged southeastern edge, bordering Kumana National Park. Stretching from the surf breaks north of Okanda to the remote river mouth at Kumana, these coastal sites are defined by high sand dunes, brackish lagoons, and proximity to wildlife corridors. The region remains largely undeveloped due to its protected status, offering a landscape of rocky outcrops and seasonal nesting grounds for sea turtles. Access typically requires 4WD vehicles via park tracks.
