Heritage of Portalegre

Portalegre’s heritage spans from the Neolithic era to the Renaissance. This selection features the UNESCO-listed fortifications of Elvas, including the star-shaped Fort Santa Luzia, and the Roman ruins of Ammaia. Medieval military architecture is represented by the castles of Campo Maior, Portalegre, and Crato. The list also highlights prehistoric landmarks like the Menir da Meada—the largest on the Iberian Peninsula—and the Anta dos Pombais dolmen, alongside religious sites such as the 16th-century Cistercian Convent of São Bernardo.
