Samaria National Park Essentials

Stretching through the White Mountains of western Crete, Samaria National Park features one of Europe's longest canyons. The 16-kilometer trail begins at the Xyloskalo trailhead at 1,230 meters and descends to the coastal village of Agia Roumeli on the Libyan Sea. Key landmarks include the 'Iron Gates,' where the gorge narrows to just four meters between 300-meter cliffs, and the abandoned 14th-century village of Samaria. The park serves as a vital sanctuary for the endangered Cretan wild goat, the kri-kri.

Samaria Gorge & Peaks

Located within the White Mountains of western Crete, this area features the 16-kilometer Samaria Gorge, one of Europe's longest canyons. The route descends from the Omalos plateau to the Libyan Sea, passing through the narrow 'Iron Gates' where rock walls rise 300 meters high. Surrounding the gorge are the Lefka Ori peaks, including Pachnes, the range's highest summit at 2,452 meters, and the rugged formations of Gingilos and Volakiás. The park is a protected UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and habitat for the rare Kri-Kri goat.

Historic Churches of Samaria

The Samaria Gorge houses several historic Byzantine chapels and Greek Orthodox shrines, many dating back to the 13th and 14th centuries. These sites, such as the 14th-century Osia Maria which gave the gorge its name, feature traditional stone architecture and preserved frescoes. Located along the main hiking trail and within the abandoned village of Samaria, these places of worship offer insight into the region's religious history and its connection to the ancient temples that preceded them.

Samaria's Ruins and Forts

This collection features a network of 19th-century Ottoman fortifications, known as Koules, and ancient archaeological sites along Crete's rugged southern coast. These structures were strategically positioned to monitor the rebellious Sfakia region and the entrance to the Samaria Gorge. The list includes the defensive ruins surrounding Agia Roumeli and Loutro, alongside the ancient harbor of Poikilassos, offering insight into the military history and maritime importance of the Libyan Sea coastline.

Bridges and Paths of Samaria

The Samaria Gorge features a series of historic bridges and stone-paved paths essential for navigating its steep, rocky terrain. These structures include traditional kalnterimia—hand-laid cobblestone routes designed for mule traffic and foot travel. The engineering reflects centuries of adaptation to the White Mountains' seasonal water flows and rugged limestone cliffs. These crossings provide stable passage over the riverbed and through the narrowest sections of the canyon, showcasing historic Cretan mountain infrastructure.
