Mountain peaks in Southland

The Southland region of New Zealand contains some of the country's most dramatic alpine topography, centered primarily within Fiordland National Park. This selection features Mitre Peak, which rises 1,692 meters from the shores of Milford Sound, and Key Summit, a prominent viewpoint along the Routeburn Track overlooking the Hollyford and Eglinton valleys. The list also includes Secretary Island's Mount Grono and the granite peaks of Stewart Island, representing the diverse geological formations of the southern South Island.

Mitre Peak

Rising 1,692 meters directly from the waters of Milford Sound, this iconic mountain is named for its resemblance to a bishop's mitre. It consists of five closely grouped peaks and is one of the most photographed landmarks in New Zealand.

Key Summit

A 919-meter peak accessible via the Routeburn Track, providing panoramic views of the Hollyford, Eglinton, and Marian valleys. The summit is characterized by unique alpine wetlands and small glacial tarns.

Rocky Mountain

A 549-meter granite peak situated on Stewart Island (Rakiura) near the head of Paterson Inlet. It offers views across the island's forested interior and the rugged southern coastline.

Mount Grono

Mount Grono, previously spelled Mount Groznoz, is a 1,196-metre peak on Secretary Island, part of New Zealand's Fiordland National Park.

Mount Nantes

A peak located in the remote wilderness of Fiordland National Park between Doubtful Sound and Dusky Sound, featuring the steep, glaciated terrain characteristic of the Southern Alps.
