Sacred Sites and Churches

Taormina’s religious heritage spans centuries, with many sites built directly upon ancient Greek and Roman foundations. This collection includes the 13th-century fortress-cathedral of San Nicolò di Bari and the Santuario Madonna della Rocca, which is carved into the hillside rock. Visitors can find examples of Norman-Arab, Baroque, and Byzantine architecture, often featuring repurposed marble from antiquity and panoramic views over the Ionian Sea and Mount Etna.

Santuario Madonna della Rocca

17th-century sanctuary carved directly into the limestone rock of Monte Tauro. It offers panoramic views of Taormina and the ancient Greek Theatre.

Chiesa di Santa Caterina di Alessandria

17th-century Baroque church built atop the ruins of a Roman Odeon. It features a pink marble portal and a statue of Saint Catherine dating to 1705.

Chiesa di San Biagio

18th-century church constructed on the remains of a Greek temple dedicated to Zeus. It is located near the Greco-Roman Odeon and features a simple stone facade.

Chiesa Madonna della Rocca

Small place of worship situated on the slopes of Monte Tauro, adjacent to the Saracen Castle and the Santuario Madonna della Rocca.

San Pancrazio

Dedicated to the patron saint of Taormina, this church stands on the ruins of a Greek temple of Jupiter Serapis. It features 18th-century Baroque altars and marble decorations.

Chiesa di San Nicolò di Bari

Known as the Duomo of Taormina, this 13th-century fortress-cathedral features Norman-Arab architecture, a Renaissance portal, and a 17th-century fountain in the square.

Chiesa di Sant'Antonio Abate

14th-century church located near Porta Catania. It originally served as part of a hospital and features a simple architectural style characteristic of medieval Taormina.

Chiesa di San Pietro

Small church with Byzantine origins, considered one of the oldest religious structures in the area. It is located in the lower residential district of Taormina.
