Church of St Maria Formosa

Local nameChiesa di Santa Maria Formosa
LocationCastello, Venice, Italy

This Venetian church is a unique sight. Built in the 15th century, it has two facades on opposite sides of the building, each in a different architectural style. Inside, you can find a panel of Saint Barbara painted by the famous artist Palma Vecchio.

It also has an amusing story linked to its origin. According to legend, the Bishop of Oderzo was inspired to order its construction after he was commanded by the Virgin Mary in his dream to do so. The holy virgin was so well-endowed in his vision though, that he decided to dedicate the church to "Santa Maria Formosa", which literally means "The Beautiful Saint Mary".
