The 330-meter-high wrought-iron lattice tower was designed by engineer Gustave Eiffel and architect Stéphen Sauvestre, with contributions from engineers Maurice Koechlin and Émile Nouguier. Construction began on January 28, 1887, and the structure officially opened on March 31, 1889, as the monumental entrance to the 1889 World's Fair. While it was once the tallest human-made structure in the world, it continues to serve as an active broadcast transmitter.
The structure consists of three distinct levels accessible via elevators or stairs. The first level features a glass floor, providing a direct view of the ground below. The second level and the summit house observation decks, with the summit being the highest public observation deck in the European Union. Dining facilities and event spaces are located within the tower.
The tower is open to the public and attracts millions annually. Access to the summit is optional, with routes available via stairs or elevators. Exploration occurs at an individual pace, and the experience is sometimes paired with a Seine River cruise to view nearby UNESCO-listed buildings.
