Takayama's Unmissable Heritage

Takayama features a well-preserved Edo-period merchant district known as Sanmachi Suji, characterized by dark wood architecture and sake breweries. The city is home to the Takayama Jin’ya, the only surviving provincial government office of the Tokugawa shogunate. Beyond the historic center, the Hida Folk Village showcases traditional thatched-roof farmhouses, while the Shinhotaka Ropeway provides access to the Japanese Alps. Daily morning markets along the Miyagawa River offer local crafts and Hida produce, reflecting centuries-old trading traditions.

Japanese Alps Adventure

This collection highlights the rugged terrain of the Northern Japanese Alps near Takayama, featuring three of the nation’s 100 Famous Mountains: Mt. Norikura, Mt. Hotaka, and the iconic spear-tipped Mt. Yari. The list includes essential high-altitude alpine huts like Yaridaira Goya and Sugoroku Goya, which provide shelter and supplies for hikers traversing the Hida Range. Key natural landmarks include the 64-meter-high Hirayu Waterfall and the reflective waters of Kagami-daira, offering views of the surrounding 3,000-meter peaks.

Takayama Cultural Treasures

Takayama preserves a significant collection of Edo-period structures and religious sites within the Hida region. This list features the Takayama Jin’ya, the only remaining provincial government office of its kind, and Hida Folk Village, which showcases traditional thatched-roof farmhouses. It includes the Sakurayama Hachimangu Shrine, host of the Takayama Festival, and various Buddhist temples like Hida Kokubunji, home to a three-story pagoda and a 1,200-year-old ginkgo tree.

Takayama Mountain Views & Culture

This collection features the Shinhotaka Ropeway, Japan’s unique double-decker aerial lift providing access to the Northern Alps. It includes the Nishihotakaguchi observation deck at 2,156 meters, the historic white-walled storehouses along the Seto River in Hida-Furukawa, and the 64-meter-high Hirayu Great Falls. Visitors can explore the Shokawa Soba Road or visit locations that inspired scenes in the animated film 'Your Name'.
