One Day in Dresden

Dresden is one of the most beautiful cities in Germany with a long history and rich art collections. It makes for a popular one day trip from Berlin or Prague, as it is easily accessible by car or train. If you've got only one day in Dresden, take your time to visit the Old Town and then unwind with a walk along the river.

Start your visit with the Romanesque Kreuzkirche (Church of the Holy Cross) and then continue to the Old Market, Dresden's main square, which turns into a huge Christmas market every year at advent. Then move to the historical center of Dresden which boasts Frauenkirche, an 18th-century Lutheran church damaged during World War II. Its remains served as a war memorial until the church was restored in the 1990s.

Next, pass along the Procession of Princes, a 19th-century large mural depicting a parade of the rulers of Saxony. Head to the Dresden Castle, a former residence of Saxon rulers, and then to Zwinger, a Rococo style palace complex which now houses museums. Here, make sure to explore the gardens and the Nymphenbad fountain. If you've got time, visit Old Masters’ Gallery showcasing Renaissance and Baroque masterpieces.

After leaving Zwinger, admire the Semper Opera House, where Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss premiered some of their most important works. The building mixes several architectural styles and it is considered to be a great example of Dresden Baroque architecture. Finish your day by strolling the banks of the river Elbe with Brühl's Terrace stretching above it.
