Lakes and Reservoirs
Belize’s inland waters range from the vast New River Lagoon, which provided a vital transport route for the ancient Maya, to the brackish Shipstern Lagoon in the north. This collection features diverse hydrological sites, including the high-canopy mangrove lagoons of Sarstoon-Temash National Park and the freshwater systems of the Rio Bravo Conservation and Management Area. These bodies of water serve as critical habitats for manatees, rare bird species, and diverse tropical flora across the country's varied ecological zones.
