Big Bend National Park Essentials

The Window

A dramatic V-shaped notch in the Chisos Mountains rim that drains the Chisos Basin. The trail concludes at a pour-off point overlooking the desert floor.

Balanced Rock

A large volcanic boulder precariously perched atop two other rocks. Located at the end of the Grapevine Hills Trail, it demonstrates the effects of spheroidal weathering.

Chisos Basin

Embosomed with the high Chisos Mountains, the Basin has become a focal point of the park.

Hot Springs

Geothermal springs on the banks of the Rio Grande. These 105°F mineral waters are contained within the remains of a 1909 bathhouse.

Emory Peak

Emory Peak, located in Big Bend National Park, is the highest peak in the Chisos Mountains and the highest in Brewster County.

Boquillas Canyon Trail

Hike up the trail to get wonderful views of Rio Grande river and see mortar holes created by ancient inhabitants. Walk along the canyon.

Mule Ears Overlook

Panther Junction Visitor Center

Fossil Bone Exhibit

An open-air museum displaying the paleontological history of the region. Exhibits include replicas of ancient crocodiles and the giant pterosaur Quetzalcoatlus.
