Forts and Hillforts of Kaunas

Kaunas is defined by its layered defensive history, ranging from ancient Baltic hillforts to the massive 19th-century Kaunas Fortress. This ring of nineteen forts and numerous batteries was constructed by the Russian Empire to protect its western borders. While the Ninth and Seventh Forts now serve as museums detailing military engineering and wartime tragedies, other sites like the Fourth and Eighth Forts remain atmospheric ruins. Complementing these are scenic hillforts like Napoleon’s Hill, offering strategic views over the Nemunas and Neris rivers.

Aukštųjų Šančių piliakalnis

Scenic hillfort overlooking the Nemunas River. The site features steep natural slopes used for ancient defense and currently serves as a viewpoint for the Panemunė area.

I Fortas

Part of the first defensive ring built between 1882 and 1889. The site features original brickwork and earthworks, though much of the structure is now overgrown or partially submerged.

II Fortas

Late 19th-century fortification heavily damaged during the German siege in 1915. It represents the standard polygonal design used in the initial construction of the Kaunas Fortress.

III Fortas

One of the most intact brick fortifications from the 1880s. The site includes a complex system of underground tunnels, barracks, and storage rooms used by the Russian Imperial Army.

IV Fortas

Symmetrical 19th-century fortification featuring well-preserved underground corridors. Historically significant as a site of resistance during the 1915 siege and later used during the Nazi occupation.

V Fortas

Built on difficult, hilly terrain, this fort features a unique layout of deep moats and earthen embankments designed to adapt to the natural landscape of the Zuikinė area.

VI Fortas

This 19th-century fort now serves as an outdoor branch of the Vytautas the Great War Museum, displaying a large collection of tanks, artillery, and military transport.

Geležinkelio (Palemono) fortas

A specialized fortification built to protect the strategic railway tunnel and bridge. It is smaller than the numbered forts but occupies a key tactical position near Palemonas.

Veršvų piliakalnis

Ancient Baltic hillfort and settlement site on the Nemunas riverbank. It features steep defensive slopes and provides panoramic views of the city's western districts.

Marvelės piliakalnis

Archaeological site consisting of a hillfort and an adjacent settlement. It is historically linked to one of the largest and most researched ancient burial grounds in Lithuania.

Pakalniškių piliakalnis

Hillfort situated on the banks of the Kaunas Reservoir. It retains visible defensive ramparts and offers a direct view across the water to the Pažaislis Monastery complex.

Eigulių piliakalnis

Hillfort on the Neris riverbank featuring a flat summit and steep 15-meter slopes. Excavations have uncovered remains of wooden fortifications and household items from the 14th century.

Vieškūnų piliakalnis

One of Lithuania's most visually striking hillforts, featuring exceptionally well-preserved defensive mounds. It overlooks the Kaunas Reservoir and was a key defensive point until the late 14th century.
