Volcanic Wonders

Astroni

One of the largest and best-preserved craters in the Phlegraean Fields. It is currently a WWF-managed nature reserve featuring three small lakes and dense Mediterranean vegetation.

Sweating rooms

Two ancient natural saunas built into the side of the Solfatara crater. These chambers use natural volcanic steam for thermal treatments, a practice dating back to the Roman era.

Bocca Grande

The largest and most active fumarole within the Solfatara crater. It continuously discharges pressurized sulfurous steam at temperatures reaching approximately 160 degrees Celsius.

Grotta di Cocceio

A subterranean Roman road tunnel nearly a kilometer long, designed by architect Cocceius Auctus around 37 BC. It was constructed to connect Lake Avernus with the ancient city of Cumae.
