Liberty Statue

Local nameSzabadság-szobor
LocationGellérthegy, Budapest, Hungary

Erected in 1947, this bronze memorial stands as a silent witness of the changing regimes that ruled over Hungary in the 20th century. It is one of the dominants of the Budapest scenery, visible from as far as the banks of Danube. It provides smashing views both from below and from its upper section.

After Hungary was taken by the Red Army, the statue was dedicated to the Soviet soldiers who perished during the war. When Hungary turned into a democracy in 1989, it was dedicated to those who died for freedom and democracy ever since.

As the memorial is very popular among tourists, expect to meet with a lot of people. Be careful about your personal belongings in the crowd, too.
