Githio

Gythio Unmissables

Gythio serves as the historic port of Sparta, characterized by its neoclassical waterfront and the islet of Kranae. Key sites include the 19th-century Tzanetakis Tower, which houses the Historical and Ethnological Museum of Mani, and a well-preserved Roman theater. The coastline is marked by the rusted hull of the Dimitrios shipwreck on Valtaki Beach and the expansive sands of Mavrovouni, a nesting site for loggerhead sea turtles. Shipwreck Dimitrios

A 67-meter cargo ship abandoned on Valtaki Beach since 1981. The rusted hull is easily accessible from the shore and has become a landmark of the Laconian coast.

Archaio Theatro

Roman-era theater dating to the 1st or 2nd century AD. Built with white marble, it once seated approximately 4,000 spectators at the base of the ancient acropolis hill.

Pharos Kranaes

Octagonal lighthouse built in 1873 on the islet of Kranae. Standing 23 meters tall, the structure is constructed from white Taenarian marble.

Phrourio sto Baltaki

Small defensive fortification situated near the coast at Valtaki, reflecting the region's historical military architecture.

Gytheio

Central maritime terminal providing ferry connections to the islands of Kythira and Antikythira, as well as Kissamos in Crete.

PYRGOS TZANETAKE

Traditional Mani-style tower house built in 1829. It currently hosts the Historical and Ethnological Museum of Mani, featuring exhibits on regional history and local architecture.

Paralia Maurobouniou

Five-kilometer sandy beach located south of the town. It is a designated nesting ground for loggerhead sea turtles and a frequent spot for windsurfing.

Valtaki beach

Sandy stretch north of Gythio where the Dimitrios shipwreck is located. The beach offers shallow waters and views of the Laconian Gulf.

Agios Petros

Greek Orthodox church located near the entrance to Kranae islet, serving as a local religious landmark in the port area.
