Historic Fortifications

Balıkesir's strategic position between the Marmara and Aegean seas is evidenced by its diverse military and civil engineering. This collection features the remains of Cyzicus, once one of the largest cities of the ancient world, including its massive amphitheater and hexagonal defensive tower. The Roman Aesopus Bridge showcases late antique infrastructure, while medieval strongholds like Muhla Kalesi and Dereköy Kalesi protected the region's interior and coastal approaches. These sites offer a chronological look at defensive architecture from the Hellenistic period through the Byzantine era.
