Kroměříž

Spring and autumn are mild and the best times to see the gardens without summer crowds. Summers are warm, sometimes hot, and the greenery is at its fullest. Winters are cold and grey, and the Flower Garden closes to visitors for the coldest months.

Time a summer visit around Hudba v zahradách a zámku Kroměříž. This international music festival fills the chateau's Assembly Hall and the Flower Garden's colonnade with concerts on summer weekends.

The gardens look their best from May to September, when the flowerbeds and tree canopy are in full leaf.

Kroměříž Castle is the reason Kroměříž exists on the map. This vast Baroque residence was built for the archbishops of Olomouc, and its picture gallery holds Titian's Flaying of Marsyas. In 1848, fleeing Austrian lawmakers used its Assembly Hall to draft a constitution after revolution forced them out of Vienna. Climb the tower for a view over the town and both gardens.

Flower Garden is a geometric 17th-century garden of clipped hedges and a long arcaded colonnade. It also has a rotunda with a Foucault pendulum. It is the more compact and manicured of the town's two UNESCO-listed gardens.

Castle Garden is the larger, wilder counterpart. This English-style landscape park has canals, cast-iron bridges and a collection of exotic trees, plus a small animal enclosure that keeps children entertained.

On the main square, Church of Saint Maurice is a 13th-century Gothic church with twin towers. It was founded under Bishop Bruno of Schauenburg and rebuilt several times since. Nearby, the Baroque Plague Column was raised as a plague memorial, a common sight on Moravian squares.

Town Hall anchors the arcaded main square, Velké náměstí. Its pastel facades are worth a slow walk between the chateau and the church.

• Catch a concert in the Flower Garden's colonnade or the chateau's Assembly Hall during the summer music festival, when the UNESCO gardens double as a concert setting.
• Cycle the flat riverside path along the Morava River out into the surrounding Haná farmland villages.
• Join Hanácký den, the town's annual celebration of Haná folk costume, music and dance, if your visit lines up with it.
• Climb the chateau tower for a view over both gardens and the rooftops of the old town.

Kroměříž sits centrally enough in Moravia that several very different day trips are within easy reach.

• Holešov — about 20 minutes by bus or car. A Renaissance chateau and one of the country's best-preserved former Jewish quarters, including a 17th-century synagogue.
• Zlín — about 30 minutes by train. The company town the Baťa shoe empire built from scratch in the 1920s and 30s, full of striking functionalist architecture and a large zoo at Lešná.
• Olomouc — about 45 minutes by train. A historic university city built around a UNESCO-listed Holy Trinity Column and a cluster of Baroque fountains.
• Buchlovice — about 45–60 minutes by car. A Baroque chateau famous for its rose garden, with the medieval Buchlov Castle a short hike into the hills above the village.
• Lednice and Valtice — about 2 hours by car. The Lednice-Valtice cultural landscape, a UNESCO-listed stretch of chateaus, follies and vineyards at the heart of Moravian wine country. Worth the longer drive if you have a full day to spare.

• By air: Kroměříž has no airport of its own. The nearest options with scheduled commercial service are Brno-Tuřany, about 1 hour 15 minutes by car, and Ostrava's Leoš Janáček Airport, about 1 hour 45 minutes away. Both run limited seasonal and charter routes. Most international travelers instead fly into Prague or Vienna and continue overland — Prague is roughly 3.5 hours by train, Vienna about 2.5 hours by car.
• By train: Kroměříž's own station sits on a short branch line. It meets the main Prague–Přerov–Ostrava/Zlín corridor a few minutes away at Hulín, so most journeys involve a quick change there. Direct or one-change regional trains link Kroměříž with Olomouc, Zlín and Brno.
• By bus: Regional and long-distance coaches connect Kroměříž directly with Zlín, Olomouc and Brno. Buses are often quicker than the train because they skip the Hulín change.

• On foot: The historic center is compact and flat. The chateau, both gardens and the main square are all within a 15-minute walk of each other.
• Public transit: Local buses run infrequently and most visitors never need them. If you do ride one, pay the driver on board.
• Cycling: The Haná plain is flat and well suited to cycling. A riverside path along the Morava River connects Kroměříž to the wider regional cycling network.

• Is a car worth it?: Not for the town itself — the center is small and walkable. A car earns its keep for reaching Buchlovice, the Wallachian countryside, or Lednice-Valtice at your own pace.
• Parking: The main visitor car park sits right below the chateau on Sněmovní náměstí. Further paid parking and street spaces surround the historic center.

Kroměříž sits in Haná, one of Moravia's main farming regions. Expect hearty, unfussy Czech cooking built around pork, dumplings and cabbage, plus the sweet poppy-seed and plum-jam kolache the region is known for.

For a meal, look around Velké náměstí and the streets connecting it to the chateau. This stretch has the town's main cluster of cafés and restaurants, many with outdoor seating in summer.

Kroměříž is a quiet, low-crime town, and violent crime against tourists is essentially unheard of. Keep half an eye on belongings around the main square and gardens during festival weekends, when crowds are larger. Otherwise the usual big-city scams simply don't apply here.

Kroměříž grew up around a bishop's residence granted to the see of Olomouc in the 12th century, and it stayed in church hands for the next 800 years. Church of Saint Maurice was founded in the 13th century under Bishop Bruno of Schauenburg. The town flourished as a regional center of art and learning under a succession of prince-bishops.

Swedish troops devastated the town during the Thirty Years' War. Bishop Karel of Liechtenstein-Castelcorn rebuilt it afterward in the Baroque style that still defines it today, commissioning Kroměříž Castle and laying out Flower Garden in the 1660s and 70s. The chateau's biggest brush with national history came in 1848–49, when the Austrian Imperial Constituent Assembly relocated here after revolution broke out in Vienna and drafted a liberal constitution in its Assembly Hall — dissolved by the emperor before it could take effect, but remembered as a landmark moment in Czech constitutional history. Director Miloš Forman later used the chateau and gardens as a stand-in for 18th-century Vienna and Prague while filming Amadeus in 1984.
