Mojácar

Town · Andalusia, 🇪🇸 Spain

Mójacar is a whitewashed hill village in the province of Almería, in the southeast of Spain, about 90 km northeast of Almería city, on a hill about 2 km from the sea. Its cube-shaped white houses and narrow lanes show Moorish origins, and the viewpoints look out over the coast.

Below the village, Mojácar Playa has about 17 km of beaches, and the nearby Cabo de Gata natural park has unspoiled coves. It is dry and sunny, with one of the mildest winters in Spain.

Mojácar is a safe village. The sun is strong, so use sun protection. The village is steep, so wear comfortable shoes. Check the beach flags before swimming.

History

Mojácar was an Iberian and Roman settlement, and under Moorish rule it was a fortified town. It was one of the last to surrender to the Catholic Monarchs in 1488.

In the 20th century it was depopulated, but in the 1960s the municipality promoted the village to artists and visitors, which started its recovery as a tourist destination.
