Neptune Fountain

Local nameNeptunbrunnen
LocationMitte, Berlin, Deutschland

One of the most iconic fountains in Berlin, Neptune Fountain is a 10-meter-tall baroque fountain, located at the very center of the city. It didn't always stand here, though. Originally, the fountain could be found at Schlossplatz. It was only moved to its present location in 1969.

The fountain, designed by Reinhold Begas, is decorated by a statue of the Roman god of waters and seas: Neptune, with four women surrounding him. They are meant to symbolise four rivers - Oder, Vistula, Rhine and Elbe. These rivers were the main watercourses in Prussia, as Germany was called in the late 19th century when the fountain was constructed.

In winter, there is a skating rink and a Christmas market around the fountain.
