Chlum u Třeboně
Chlum u Třeboně is a small market town in the Třeboň pond country of South Bohemia, a few kilometres from the Austrian border. Forests and large fish ponds surround it, and two of them have sandy shores that are good for swimming. The town was once a summer seat of Archduke Franz Ferdinand d'Este, and it has been a summer resort since the 1920s.
Come here for a quiet lakeside holiday: swimming, camping, cycling on flat forest roads and walking around the ponds. It suits families and people who like simple outdoor stays. For a historic town with more to see, Třeboň is about 20 minutes away by car.

When to visit
Summer is the main season. July and August are warm, the ponds are warm enough for swimming, and the campsites are full. Late spring and September are quieter and good for cycling and walking. Winters are cold, and many campsites and restaurants close.
In October and November, the region's big ponds are drained and the fish are harvested. These pond harvests are the best-known event in the Třeboň area, and some are open to visitors. The fishery publishes the dates each year, so check before you plan a trip around one.

Top sights
Staňkovský rybník is the deepest pond in the Czech Republic and dates from the 16th century. It has sandy beaches, clear water and several campsites along its forested shores.
rybník Hejtman is the pond right next to the town centre. It is smaller and calmer, with a beach and campsites on its southern shore.
zámek Chlum u Třeboně stands by the Hejtman pond. It was rebuilt in the early 1900s as the summer home of Franz Ferdinand d'Este. Today it is a hotel, but its large English park with old trees and statues is open to walk in.
Svět obrů is a seasonal park in the chateau grounds with more than 100 large moving models of dinosaurs, giant insects and other creatures. It is a good stop for families with children.
Nanebevzetí Panny Marie is a Baroque pilgrimage church on the hill above the Hejtman pond, modelled on the famous shrine at Mariazell in Austria. It was damaged by fire in 2024 and is closed inside, but you can walk the Way of the Cross with its statues of saints down to the pond.

Getting there
- By air: The nearest large airports are Prague and Vienna. Both are about 2 to 2.5 hours away by car.
- By train: The nearest station is Majdalena, about 3 km west of the town, on the regional line between Veselí nad Lužnicí and České Velenice via Třeboň. From Prague or České Budějovice, change trains at Veselí nad Lužnicí. Plan your journey with IDOS journey planner or České dráhy.
- By bus: Regional buses link Chlum with Třeboň and Jindřichův Hradec. A seasonal cycle bus also runs from Třeboň via Majdalena to Chlum and Staňkov.
- By car: A car is the easiest way to arrive and to explore the pond country. Chlum is about 17 km east of Třeboň.
