Kopřivnice

Town · 🇨🇿 Czechia

Kopřivnice is a small industrial town in the Beskydy foothills of eastern Moravia. It grew up almost entirely around one company: Tatra, one of the world's oldest vehicle makers, founded here in 1850. Streets, squares, and several museums trace that story, from horse-drawn carriages to today's heavy trucks. The town is also the birthplace of the Olympic runner Emil Zátopek and the javelin champion Dana Zátopková, both born in 1922.

This is not a place with a grand historic square. It suits travelers who enjoy technical museums and motoring history, and it makes an easy stop on a trip through the Beskydy foothills, often paired with the medieval tower of neighboring Štramberk.

When to visit

Spring and autumn are mild and pleasant for walking around town and up the nearby Štramberk tower. Summers are warm with occasional afternoon storms; winters are cold, with snow common in the surrounding hills. Car enthusiasts should time a visit for the Tatra Veteran Rally Beskydy, usually held in late summer, when historic Tatra vehicles parade through the region and stop in Kopřivnice.

Top sights

Tatra Technical Museum is the headline attraction: hundreds of Tatra passenger cars and prototypes, including some of the earliest automobiles built in continental Europe. It is not very hands-on, but the collection is remarkable for anyone interested in car design.

Next door, Tatra Truck Museum covers the trucks and heavy vehicles that kept the Tatra name alive through the 20th century, with nearly 80 vehicles inside a former factory foundry building.

Parked alongside it is Slovenská strela, a streamlined 1936 motor railcar built in Kopřivnice and now a national cultural monument, fully restored after decades outdoors.

Fojtství Museum is the oldest building in town, an 18th-century house that was the birthplace of Ignác Šustala, the founder of Tatra, and now covers the town's earlier, pre-automotive history.

A short drive away in Štramberk, Štramberk Castle Tower is a 40-meter Gothic tower, the only substantial remnant of a 13th-century castle, with panoramic views over the Beskydy foothills.

At its base, Jaroňkova útulna is a decorated timber building from 1904 whose folk-motif interior was featured on a Czech gold coin in 2025; today it also houses the tower's ticket office.

Below the tower, Štramberk Botanical Garden occupies a former limestone quarry, with a stone labyrinth, limestone wetland habitats, and around 1,200 plant species.

What to experience

A few things to do here beyond the museums:

  • Climb Štramberk Castle Tower in the early evening for a sunset view over the Beskydy foothills; the tower stays open later in the summer season.
  • Cool off at the town's open-air municipal pool complex on a hot summer afternoon.
  • If visiting in late summer, watch dozens of restored Tatra veterans and prototypes roll through town during the Tatra Veteran Rally Beskydy.

Day trips

Kopřivnice sits within easy reach of several notable Moravian towns and the Beskydy mountains.

  • Štramberk — 10-15 minutes by car or bus; the twin town's Gothic tower and old square pair naturally with a Kopřivnice museum visit.
  • Příbor — around 15 minutes by car or train; a historic square and Sigmund Freud Birth House, a museum in the house where Sigmund Freud was born.
  • Nový Jičín — around 15 minutes by car or bus; known as the "town of hats" for its centuries-old hat-making industry, with an arcaded Renaissance square.
  • Hukvaldy Castle in the village of Hukvaldy — around 25 minutes by car; one of Moravia's largest castle ruins, birthplace of composer Leoš Janáček, with peacocks roaming the grounds and a summer music festival.
  • Frenštát pod Radhoštěm and Rožnov pod Radhoštěm — 30-40 minutes by car; gateway towns to the Beskydy mountains, with hiking trails up Radhošť and an open-air folk museum in Rožnov.
  • Ostrava — around 35 minutes by car or train; the region's biggest city, with the Lower Vítkovice industrial complex and a lively restaurant scene.

Where to explore

Kopřivnice sits in a cluster of small Moravian towns that combine naturally into one trip.

  • Štramberk is practically a twin town, minutes away, known for its castle tower and traditional gingerbread.
  • Příbor and Nový Jičín share the same district and both have well-preserved historic centers.
  • Frenštát pod Radhoštěm is the closest gateway to hiking in the Beskydy mountains.

Getting there

  • By air: The nearest airport with scheduled passenger service is Ostrava's Leoš Janáček Airport (OSR), around 20 km away; a taxi or transfer takes roughly 20-30 minutes. Most international travelers instead fly into Prague or Vienna and continue by train.
  • By train: Kopřivnice has its own station on a regional line, connecting at Studénka onto the main Ostrava–Přerov–Prague corridor; the journey from Prague takes roughly 4-4.5 hours.
  • By bus: Regional buses connect Kopřivnice with Nový Jičín, Ostrava, and Frenštát pod Radhoštěm throughout the day.

Getting around

  • Public transit: Local and regional buses run through town; buy tickets from the driver or through the regional transport app. KODIS Transport
  • Taxi: A handful of local taxi firms operate; useful for reaching the Štramberk tower without walking.
  • On foot / cycling: The town center is small and easily walkable. A signed cycling route also connects Kopřivnice with Štramberk and the wider Beskydy foothills.

Driving

  • Is a car worth it?: A car makes it easy to combine Kopřivnice with nearby towns and the Beskydy hills in a single day; without one, regional buses and trains still cover the connections, just more slowly.
  • Parking: Free and paid street parking is available near the main museums, with dedicated parking at the Tatra Technical Museum and the truck museum.
  • Restrictions: None beyond normal town-center traffic; no congestion charge or low-emission zone applies.

Food & drink

Kopřivnice itself has few standout restaurants, but neighboring Štramberk is famous for Štramberk ears, small cone-shaped spiced gingerbread cookies sold from bakeries around the main square; a local legend ties them to a medieval battle against Tatar raiders. For a sit-down meal, the streets around Kopřivnice's main square hold a handful of casual Czech restaurants serving standard regional dishes.

Safety & health

Kopřivnice is a quiet, low-crime town with none of the pickpocketing risk of larger Czech cities. Tap water is safe to drink everywhere. The main practical caution is traffic near the Tatra factory grounds, where heavy trucks share roads with pedestrians; take care crossing there.

History

Kopřivnice's history is inseparable from one company. In 1850, local craftsman Ignác Šustala founded a carriage workshop here that grew into Tatra, one of the world's oldest vehicle manufacturers still in operation today. In 1897 the company built the Präsident, regarded as one of the first automobiles made in continental Europe, at its Kopřivnice works. The building is now Fojtství Museum, covering the town's earlier, pre-automotive history.

The town's other great story is Emil Zátopek, the long-distance runner born here in 1922. He won three gold medals at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, in the 5,000 m, 10,000 m, and marathon, a feat still unmatched in Olympic history. His future wife, javelin champion Dana Zátopková, was born on the very same day and won her own Olympic gold in Helsinki.

Tatra's Kopřivnice works also produced the streamlined Slovenská strela railcar in 1936, an engineering landmark of interwar Czechoslovakia, now restored and on public display.
